NEWARK, Del. - Two alumni of the University of Delaware cross country and track & field programs will be inducted into the Delaware Track and Field Hall of Fame, the organization announced earlier in October. Former pole vaulter, Ashley Bailey ('19), and men's track & field head coach, Charlie Powell, will be inducted on Saturday, November 22. An induction luncheon will be held at the DuPont Country Club.
Bailey competed for the Fightin' Blue Hens from 2015-19. During her time with the track & field program, she was a four-time medalist at the CAA Championships, including an individual championship in the pole vault in 2018, along with two second-place finishes in 2017 and 2019. She was a part of the 2019 CAA Outdoor Championship for the Blue Hens and was a two-time NCAA Preliminary qualifier, earning a spot in both 2018 and 2019. Prior to Bailey's arrival in Newark, no Blue Hen had ever cleared 13 feet in the pole vault. By the time her career ended, she cleared the mark on six different occasions.Â
A native of Middletown, Del., and a product of Middletown High School, Bailey came to the Blue Hens as a proven winner, taking home DIAA state championships in the pole vault as a sophomore, junior and senior with the Cavaliers. Her state record of 12' 3" still remains active.
Powell was the head outdoor men's track & field coach for UD from 1980-82. In 1980, the Blue Hens went 4-1 in dual meets, and capped off the season with an East Coast Conference Championship. Powell also coached at Penn for 25 years before retiring in 2011 and served as the director of Penn Relays Distance Night, coordinator of track events, and a member of the Penn Relays Planning Committee. He also worked as the director of track and field at the SPIRE Academy in Ohio.
