Five Hit Day From Minckler Leads Baseball to Series Sweep Over FIU

NEWARK, Del. – With the help of a five-hit day from Matthew Minckler, the University of Delaware baseball program earned a series sweep as the Fightin' Blue Hens defeated FIU by a score of 13-9 at Bob Hannah Stadium on Sunday.
With the win, the Fightin' Blue Hens overall record improves to 17-31 and are 5-19 in CUSA play. UD extended its win streak to four games and have won six of the last eight contests.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Minckler went 5-for-5 on the day and drove in one run. All five hits came off singles.
- Four additional Blue Hens had multi-hit games: Anthony DeCesare (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI, BB), Sam Winsett (2-for-6, 3 RBI), Evan Bouldin (2-for-3 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB) and Jeremy Wolf (2-for-5, RBI).
- Ben Moyzan started on the mound on Sunday. He pitched three innings, allowed three runs off four hits and struck out one batter. He earned the win and boasts a 2-1 record.
- In relief was Matt Reyes, Jackson Hulcher and Dylan Bryan to pitch the final six innings. Byran earned his first save of the season after he pitched the final 1.2 innings and struck out two batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- For the second straight game, the Blue Hens offense got out to a quick start. In the first inning, DeCesare got UD on the board with an RBI single up the right side.
- The following inning, Delaware put up a four-spot when Winsett hit an infield single to the middle of the infield that scored Minckler and Sal Mineo. Bouldin and Wolf both hit doubles to drive in a run to give Delaware a 5-0 lead.
- FIU cut the Blue Hens lead to 5-3 with a three-run home run in the top of the third.
- UD opened up its lead with a six run sixth inning. Winsett got the rally started with a bunt single that led to a throwing error on the FIU first baseman. Minckler advance home on the sequence. The following at-bat, Bouldin cleared the bases with a three-run home run.
- The rally continued with a solo home run from Anthony DeCesare, and an RBI single from Minckler.
- The Panthers added six runs between the seventh and eighth inning to make it 11-9. However, a Harry Carr two-run single shut down the FIU comeback.
GAME NOTES
- The Blue Hens have earned their first Conference USA series sweep.
- UD has won four-straight home games. The last time this happened was from February 25-March 1 when the Blue Hens defeated La Salle in a midweek game, along with a series sweep over Rider.
- Minckler's five hit day is a new career-high.
UP NEXT
The Blue Hens hit the road and travel to Huntsville, Texas for a three-game series against Sam Houston from May 6-8. All three games of the road weekend series can be viewed on ESPN+.
