Huge Nights From Inman, Gillens Lead Volleyball to a Five-Set Victory over VCU

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware's Kennedi Inman had a career-high 66 assists, while Anna Logan Gillens recorded a career-high 28 kills and hit .328 to lead Delaware to a five-set victory (29-27, 23-25, 24-26, 27-25, 15-12) over VCU.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Gillens' 28 kills and Inman's 66 assists were the most among all players in the match.
- Inman also recorded a career-best 18 digs.
- Thalia Yancey had a double-double with a career-high 18 kills and 15 digs.
- Asia Murray had a career-high 14 kills with five blocks.
- Carolina Sayeg Blak hit .533 with a career-best eight kills.
- Morgan Campbell had four blocks and seven kills.
- Jayda Redd had 16 digs.
- Emily Zgonc recorded 10 digs.
- Jayda Gray had nine digs.
- Taylor Holly recorded eight digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- VCU jumped out to a 5-0 lead right away. Delaware was able to tie the set at 7-7, but VCU maintained a lead of 13-9 and 17-13.
- UD had a stretch of scoring six of the next eight points to even the score at 19-19. A 3-0 run punctuated by a kill from Yancey gave Delaware its first lead at 22-21. Delaware scored four of the final five points of the set to finish it off at 29-27.
- Gillens had a set-high seven kills, while Yancey added six. Inman had 12 assists and Redd had six digs.
SECOND SET
- Delaware went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-5 lead in the set. After kills by Gillens and Redd, Delaware increased its lead to 19-11.
- VCU chipped away and cut the lead to 20-17 before eventually tying it up at 22-22. VCU scored the final three points of the set to win 25-23.
- Gillens again had a set-high in kills with five, while Yancey had four. Inman had 13 assists.
THIRD SET
- There were 13 ties and six lead changes in the set. VCU's largest lead was four at 9-5.
- Delaware battled back to tie the set at 17-17 and took a 19-18 lead. A kill by Gillens and Murray put Delaware up 23-22 and 24-23, but VCU scored the set's final three points to go up 2-1.
- Gillens had seven kills in the set while hitting .538. Inman added 15 assists.
FOURTH SET
- VCU's largest lead in the fourth was 8-4. Delaware was able to tie the set at 10-10, and went on a 3-0 run to take a 14-12 lead.
- VCU retook the lead at 20-18 and led 24-22. Kills by Murray and Campbell evened the score, then Delaware scored the set's last three points to win 27-25 and force a fifth set.
- Gillens, Campbell, and Murray all had four kills as Delaware hit .341 in the set. Inman had 16 assists and six digs.
FIFTH SET
- Delaware never trailed in the final set, jumping ahead 3-0 before VCU eventually tied the score at 10-10.
- A 4-0 run, punctuated by consecutive kills from Gillens and Murray, gave Delaware match point before Gillens ended it with her 28th kill.
- Gillens added five more kills and hit .400 in the final set, while Inman had 10 assists. Delaware hit .381 in the set.
MATCH NOTES
- Inman's 66 assists were the most by a Delaware player since Mackenzie Olson had 67 against Penn on Sept. 19, 2012. She became the 12th player in program history with at least 65 assists in a match.
- Inman tied the single-game NCAA high this season for assists in a match - also done by Samford's Alison Ohlinger.
- Inman is the only CUSA player this season with at least 60 assists in a match. She now has three matches this season with at least 50 assists - no other CUSA player has more than one.
- Inman became the first player this season with at least 65 assists and 15 digs in a match across all NCAA levels. Macy Hinshaw of Santa Clara did so later that night against Cal Poly with 65 assists and 16 digs.
- Gillens' previous career high in kills was 26, which she recorded on Oct. 26, 2024, against Hofstra.
- Gillens is the first Delaware player with at least 25 kills and a .300 hitting percentage since Lani Mason had 27 kills and hit .309 on Oct. 30, 2022 against UNCW.
- Gillens' 28 kills are the most by a Conference USA player this season and tied for ninth most among Division I players in a match.
- Yancey has recorded double-digit digs in five consecutive matches. Tonight was the third double-double of her career.
- Murray has recorded double-digit kills in seven consecutive matches.
- Delaware has won five consecutive matches against VCU dating back to 2010.
- Of the nine matches Delaware has played this season, four have gone five sets.
- Delaware has begun the season 3-0 at home for the first time since 2024 and the fourth time in five seasons under head coach Kimberly Lambert.
