Football Stumbles at Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Delaware football team lost to the Virginia Cavaliers, 42-3, on Saturday night in Scott Stadium. The Fightin' Blue Hens fall to 2-2, while the Cavaliers rise to 3-1.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- The Hens recorded a season-high five sacks.
- QB Nick Minicucci completed 4-of-8 passes for 24 yards, before leaving the game with an injury in the first half.
- LB Colin Gallagher recorded a career-best 13 tackles to lead the team. It marked his first double-digit tackle contest.
- BAN Blake Matthews notched career highs in sacks (2.0) and TFLs (2.0) to go with a career-best 11 tackles. It was the first game with 10+ tackles for the fifth year.
- DE James Steel forced and recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter, the first of his career in each category.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Virginia took the game's opening drive 75 yards to the endzone to go up 7-0 with 7:34 left in the first quarter. After the Cavs reached the red zone on their second possession, the UD defense forced a missed field goal attempt to keep the game at 7-0.
- UVA completed a seven-yard touchdown pass on the opening play of the second quarter to go up 14-0. UD got on the board with 7:45 left in the opening half thanks to a 12-play, 53-yard drive that was capped off by a 39-yard field goal by K Tucker Smack to cut it to 14-3. The Wahoos used a 52-yard reception to increase the lead to 21-3 with 3:32 remaining in the second quarter. A fourth opening-half TD for the home team made the halftime score, 28-3.
- Virginia scored once in the third to increase the gap to 35-3.
- The Cavaliers scored another TD in the fourth to leave a 42-3 contest.
GAME NOTES
- Gallagher and B. Matthews became the first pair of Fightin' Blue Hens to record 10+ tackles in the same game since LB Gavin Moul and S KT Seay had 12 and 10, respectively, at Jax State on October 15, 2025.
- LB Jawarren Corbin and DE Kaeden Singleton made their first-career starts.
- CB Jaquise Alexander, who played the previous three seasons at North Dakota State, made his first start in a Delaware uniform.
- QB Riley Trujillo made his season debut.

The Fightin' Blue Hens will return home to host the Liberty Flames to begin CUSA play on Friday, October 2 at 7 p.m. for a sold-out Parents and Family Weekend. The game will air nationally on CBS Sports Network.
