Volleyball Comes From Behind to Defeat Fordham in Five Sets in Home Opener

NEWARK, Del. -Â University of Delaware volleyball earned a come-from-behind five-set victory over Fordham (25-15, 17-25, 16-25, 25-23, 15-12) in its home opener to improve its record to 2-2 on the season. The Fightin' Blue Hens were down 23-19 in the fourth set while trailing 2-1 before scoring the final six points to force a decisive fifth set before forcing a decisive fifth set.Â
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Thalia Yancey had 14 kills and nine digs.
- Anna Logan Gillens tallied 12 kills.Â
- Asia Murray had 10 kills with five blocks while hitting .368.
- Morgan Campbell had nine kills and hit .353 with two aces.Â
- Kennedi Inman had 40 assists.
- Emily Zgonc had 11 digs.Â
- Jayda Gray had 10 digs.Â
HOW ITÂ HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- With the score tied at six in the first set, Delaware rattled off five straight points and nine of the next 10 to take the lead at 15-7. Yancey had three kills in the run.Â
- Delaware responded to a 3-0 Fordham run by scoring three points in a row, holding a 19-11 lead before finishing off the set at 25-15.
- Delaware held Fordham to a -.029 hitting percentage, its best in any set this season. Yancey had a team-best four kills, Inman had 12 assists, and Zgonc had three digs.Â
SECONDÂ SET
- Fordham took a 14-8 lead during the second set.Â
- Delaware cut the lead down to 18-14, but Fordham scored the next four points to go ahead 22-14 before winning 25-17.Â
- Zgonc had three more digs in the set.Â
THIRDÂ SET
- Fordham went up 11-6 early in the set, but Delaware got three straight points and then a kill by Gillens and an ace by Zgonc to trim the Rams' lead to 13-11.Â
- Fordham went on a 7-1 run to take a 21-13 lead to finish off the set 25-16.Â
FOURTHÂ SET
- Fordham quickly went up 5-0, and held a 15-8 lead in the fourth set.Â
- Delaware trimmed the lead down to four, before Fordham extended its lead to 18-12. UD scored six of the next seven points, bringing the score to 19-18.Â
- After another run by Fordham put them up 23-19, Delaware scored the final six points of the set. Blocks by Inman and Campbell and a kill by Gillens capped the run. Overall, Delaware ended the fourth set on a 13-5 run to force a fifth set.Â
- Yancey and Gillens each had four kills in the set.Â
FIFTH SET
- There were nine ties and four lead changes in the final set, the most in any set in the match.Â
- The set was tied at 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, 7-7, 9-9, 10-10, 11-11, and 12-12. Fordham's largest lead of the set was 9-7. UD scored the final three points of the set with Gray recording an ace and Murray ending the match with a kill.Â
- Delaware hit .316 in the set as Murray and Campbell each had three kills.Â

MATCH NOTES
- This was Delaware's first five-set win of the season. Delaware is now 18-13 all-time in five-set matches under head coach Kimberly Lambert
- Delaware improves to 4-1 in home openers under Lambert.Â
- Yancey and Gillens have each recorded double-digit kills in all four matches this season.Â
- Gray has had at least 10 digs in three of the four matches this year.Â
- Zgonc's 11 digs were a career high.Â
- Fordham's Johana Franzen was named to the Blue Hen Invitational All-Tournament Team.Â
