Former Blue Hen pitcher Derek Wakeley begins his first season on the Delaware baseball coaching staff during the 2023 season.
Wakeley will be a volunteer, assistant pitching coach and camp director for the UD program. He will assist pitching coach Casey Kulina, and during games will serve as the team's bullpen coach. Wakeley will be the program's camp director and will also assist with on-campus recruiting, opponent scouting reports, video, analytics and techonology.
Wakeley, a native of West Deptford, N.J., was a three-year member of the Blue Hens from 2019-21 after transferring to UD from Rowan-Gloucester Community College. He earned seven wins and eight saves in 48 appearances, striking out 85 batters in 93 innings during his Blue Hen career.
Wakeley earned his bachelor's degree in economics from UD in 2020 and his MBA in 2021. He spent the 2022 season as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Rowan-Gloucester CC.
"We are excited to have Derek Wakeley back wearing the Blue Hen uniform serving as our assistant pitching coach. Like so many former Delaware players, Derek loves UD and this program. That passion combined with his work ethic is going to make him an outstanding addition to the coaching staff. Derek is determined to help grow this program while simultaneously gaining the knowledge and experience to become a college pitching coach," said UD head coach Greg Mamula.
