A Delaware alum and member of the 2003 national championship team, Ryan Carty was named the head football coach in December 2021 by Director of Intercollegiate Athletics & Recreation Services, Chrissi Rawak.
In 2024, Delaware posted back-to-back nine wins season for the first time since 2003-04. The Blue Hens opened season with six-straight wins, the second-consecutive year with a six-game winning streak. The UD offense surpassed 40 points in six games and had three contests with at least 500 yards of total offense. Delaware ranked 11th in the country in total offense (434.9 ypg) and 12th in scoring offense (34.9 ppg). UD’s defense recorded its first shutout in four seasons when it held Sacred Heart scoreless in a 49-0 victory on September 28. The Blue Hens ranked ninth nationally in rushing defense (107.0 ypg), 19th in scoring defense (21.0 ppg), 21st in total defense (319.6 ypg), and 22nd in sacks per game (2.55). Marcus Yarns became the 18th player in UD history to rush for 2,000 career yards and finished 10th in Delaware history with 2,344 career rushing yards. Phil Lutz set the program record with touchdown catches in seven-straight games. He had the most receiving yards (863) by a Delaware receiver since 2013 and receiving touchdowns (11) since 1987. The Blue Hens had a league-high 15 student-athletes earn All-CAA honors and Brock Gingrich was named an All-American by Stats Perform and Phil Steele.
The Blue Hens went 9-4 overall in 2023 as Carty became the first Delaware head coach to win at least eight games in each of his first two seasons. It was the first time since the 2003-04 seasons that UD has won eight games in consecutive seasons. After a loss at Penn State, the Blue Hens rattled off six consecutive wins, reaching as high as No. 5 in the national rankings, and seven in eight games to reach eight regular-season wins for the first time since 2010. Delaware reached the FCS Championship for the second-straight season under Carty, marking UD’s first back-to-back playoff appearances since the 2003-04 seasons. Carty’s dynamic offense ranked in the top 25 in the nation in both total offense (413.2 ypg) and scoring offense (31.6 ppg), scoring at least 40 points in five games and reaching at least 500 yards of total offense four times. Delaware averaged 160.2 rushing ypg in 2023, an increase of 17 ypg from the previous season and the most by a UD offense since 2017. Nine student-athletes earned All-CAA recognition.
Prior to being named the head coach at his alma mater, Carty spent four seasons as the offensive coordinator at Sam Houston State. Known for his explosive plays and high-energy offense, Carty was recognized for his offensive success in the spring 2021 season. Named the FCS Coordinator of the Year by FootballScoop.com and to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s “Top 40 Coaches Under 40” list, Carty played an instrumental part in Sam Houston winning the 2020 FCS National Championship as well as advancing to the 2021 FCS quarterfinals.
Carty’s offense helped lead Sam Houston to a 34-10 record from 2018-21 and a 21-1 mark in his final two seasons the past two seasons in Huntsville. The Bearkats had an undefeated regular season in 2021 and advanced to the FCS Quarterfinals. Sam Houston finished the season ranked third in the nation in scoring offense (41.0 ppg), fifth in total offense (490.9 ypg), and sixth in rushing offense (228.2 ypg).
During the Bearkats’ undefeated 10-0 spring season, SHSU ranked first nationally in total yards (4,403), first in touchdowns (45), third in first downs (204), seventh in passing yards per attempt (8.6 ypa), eighth in passing yards per completion (14.3 ypc), ninth in scoring offense (38 ppg), 13th in total offense (440 ypg), and 13th in passing offense (282 ypg).
With a proven record as one of the top offensive coordinators and quarterbacks coaches in the nation, Carty coached SHSU quarterback and Walter Payton Award finalist Eric Schmid to Southland Conference Player of the Year honors on his way to leading the FCS in total passing yards in the spring.
During his four-year stint with Sam Houston, the Bearkats advanced to the playoffs in back-to-back years and won two conference titles.
Prior to his stop in Huntsville, Carty was very familiar with the Colonial Athletic Association after an 11-year run on the New Hampshire coaching staff, including six years as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
During Carty’s stint at New Hampshire, the Wildcats qualified for the FCS playoffs in each of Carty’s six seasons as offensive coordinator, compiling an 8-6 postseason record and reaching the semifinals in 2013 and 2014. The Wildcats garnered seven or more wins every season Carty was on staff. As the offensive coordinator, UNH quarterbacks combined for 18,656 Yards and 171 TDs in 80 contests with Carty leading the offense.
Carty, a team captain during his 2006 senior campaign, earned his bachelor’s degree in management from Delaware in 2006.
A native of Branchburg, N.J., Carty and his wife, Katie, are happy to join the Blue Hen family.
