Shawn McLaughlin joined the Delaware women's volleyball staff as an associate head coach on Mar. 23, 2022. McLaughlin recently completed his third season with the Blue Hens this past Fall 2024.
McLaughlin plays a key role in the program as the Recruiting Coordinator, while also managing critical areas like academic monitoring and leading scout report preparation. He works closely with the setters and oversees the team's offensive and blocking systems. Over the past three years, his contributions have helped the program achieve major milestones, including a CAA Tournament Championship and NCAA First Round appearance (’23), a Regular Season Co-CAA Championship (’24), and three straight trips to the CAA Championship Finals (’22-‘24). Along the way, he’s been instrumental in developing top athletes, including a CAA Player of the Year, a CAA Setter of the Year, and a combined eight All-CAA honorees across First and Second Teams. He currently has an overall record of 61-23 serving as an Associate Head Coach.
In his first year in Newark, McLaughlin played an intricate roll in the 2022 campaign as the Blue Hens finished the year 17-11 record and 10-6 mark in conference play. McLaughlin helped the Blue Hens secure the third seed heading into the CAA Tournament. During the tournament, the Blue & Gold advanced to its first title match since 2016 after capturing back-to-back five-set thrilling victories over Charleston and William & Mary, respectively.
McLaughlin helped guide a spectacular season from AVCA All-American honorable mention, AVCA East All-Region, ECAC Offensive Player of the Year, CAA Player of the Year, first team all-conference and all-tournament selection Lani Mason. Mason is the first player in Delaware program history since 2007 to collect the AVCA All-America recognition, eighth Blue Hen to earn a spot on the AVCA all-region team and the first one to be recognized since the 2019 season. She is also the Blue Hens' second CAA Player of the Year since 2007. Ezgi Basaranlar was also honored as a CAA second-team selection for the second-straight year and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
McLaughlin comes to Newark after spending one season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of South Alabama. He coached alongside first-year Jaguar head coach Jesse Ortiz, where he helped Ortiz lead the 2021 squad to the program’s first-ever Sun Belt Conference (SBC) regular-season title, first SBC Tournament championship and first NCAA postseason appearance. The program posted a 25-7 overall record, including a 15-1 mark in conference play. McLaughlin also assisted in the coaching of four all-SBC selections and two all-tournament honorees, including SBC Championship Most Valuable Player in Kailey Keeble.
Prior to South Alabama, McLaughlin spent three seasons (2018-20) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham serving as an assistant coach, recruiting and offensive coordinator. During his tenure, McLaughlin coached two conference USA all-freshman selections and an all-conference honoree. McLaughlin also served as an assistant coach at the University of Incarnate Word for six seasons (2013-18), where he developed four all-conference performers and a Southland Freshman of the Year. Incarnate Word made the Southland Conference tournament every season McLaughlin was part of the coaching staff.
Before heading to San Antonio, McLaughlin coached at Denver, Nevada and UC Davis. At each stop, he was involved in the development of practice plans, the breakdown of film and scouting opponents, while also assisting in recruiting.
McLaughlin kick started his coaching career in the club circuit in 2009. He served in the capacity of head coach of Force Volleyball Club (2009-11), club technical coordinator of Silver State Volleyball Club (2011-12), head coach of Colorado Volleyball Association (2012-13) and head coach of San Antonio Magic Volleyball Club (2014-18). At the helm of San Antonio Magic volleyball club, McLaughlin’s team qualified for the USAV Junior Nationals in three separate seasons, including winning a Gold Medal in 2014 at the USAV Junior National in 14’s USA. He has also worked with USA Volleyball at its national training camp.
McLaughlin graduated in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in History Education from Lindenwood University.
