WILLIAM J. “BILL” ARMSTRONG JR.
Football (1968-71)
One of the top running backs in University of Delaware history, Bill was a standout for Hall of Fame head coach Tubby Raymond in 1968-71 and led the Blue Hens to impressive success as part of the vaunted Wing-T offense.
A native of Philadelphia, he played a key role in the three-back attack that resulted in the Blue Hens posting a three-year record of 28-5, including winning the Associated Press and United Press International wire service national championships in 1971 with a 10-1 mark, three Lambert Cup Eastern titles, three Boardwalk Bowl victories, and the 1969 Middle Atlantic Conference crown.
For his career, he rushed for 2,340 yards and 18 touchdowns, finishing his career as Delaware’s No. 3 all-time leading rusher behind teammates and UD Hall of Famers Chuck Hall and Gardy Kahoe.
Bill ran for a career-high 1,040 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior in 1971 when he earned first team Universal Sports All-American honors and played in the prestigious North-South Senior All-Star game. Showing his versatility, he also played defensive back in that game and recorded an interception.
Bill earned his degree in agriculture and engineering from Delaware in 1973.
