Women’s Track & Field (1974-77)

A pioneer in the sport of women’s track and field for the Blue Hens and a world-class woman hurdler, Thomson was making a name for herself nationally for the Blue Hens before track even became a varsity sport in 1979-80.

While competing for Delaware in 1974-77, Thomson was a two-time All-American and won the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) national 100-meter hurdles title in 1976.

She was a four-time outdoor hurdles champion and three-time indoor hurdles champion at the EAIAW regionals and was ranked second in the world in the 50-meter hurdles in 1977. At one time in her career, she was the U.S. and World record holder in the 60-yard hurdles.

A 1979 graduate of Delaware, Thomson moved on to a successful head coaching career at the University of Florida and East Carolina and also coached at Drake and Rutgers. She was inducted into the state of Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.

Her father, Bill, is a well-known track and field official in the Delaware and the U.S. and was a 1997 inductee into the state of Delaware Sports Hall of Fame.

Her husband, Bob Slowik, is a former UD football standout (Delaware ‘77), was an assistant coach for over 40 years in the National Football League with Dallas, Chicago, Cleveland, Green Bay, Denver, and Washington from 1992 until 2013. Their son, Bobby, is current an NFL assistant with San Francisco and previously with Washington.
