CONWAY HAYMAN
(1949-2020)
Football (1968-70)
One of the top offensive linemen in Delaware football history, Hayman led the Blue Hens to three consecutive Lambert Cup titles, three straight Boardwalk Bowl wins, and two straight Middle Atlantic Conference championships during his stellar career playing for UD Hall of Fame head coach Tubby Raymond.
During his three-year career, he led Blue Hens teams to marks of 8-3 (5-0 in the MAC) in 1968, 9-2 (6-0 in the MAC) in 1969, and 9-2 in 1970 for a combined mark of 26-7.
A Newark, Del. native, Hayman was a consensus first team All-American and All-East selection at offensive guard in 1970 and was a two-time All-MAC selection. During his career, Delaware consistently ranked among the nation's top rushing and scoring teams, surpassing 30 or more points 23 times in 33 games.
He was a sixth round pick in the 1971 NFL draft and went on to play 71 games over 10 pro seasons, including six with the Houston Oilers. He was an outstanding blocker and helped pave the way for Hall of Fame running back Earl Campbell as the Oilers advanced to the NFL playoffs in 1978, 1979, and 1980.
A member of the all-time Delaware team selected in 1989, Hayman is also a member of the state of Delaware Sports Hall of Fame (1986). He also served as head football coach at Prairie View A&M (1984-87) and was an assistant at Prairie View, Texas Southern, and Florida A&M.
He passed away in March, 2020 at the age of 71.
