A standout in both baseball and basketball for the Blue Hens, Green followed with a 13-year major league baseball career and even more success as a big league manager.
A native of Wilmington, Del., Green enjoyed a stellar two-year career on the mound for the Blue Hens in the mid-1950's. As a sophomore in 1954, he posted a 2-3 record, a 3.20 earned run average, and struck out a team-high 36 batters. He was nearly unstoppable as a junior in 1955, going 6-0 on the mound with a miniscule 0.88 ERA along with a team-high.
His two-year career numbers saw him post a record of 8-3 with a 1.89 ERA with 75 strikeouts in 91 innings. Following his junior season, he signed a professional contract with the hometown Philadelphia Phillies.
As a 6-5 center in basketball, Green averaged 9.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per game in two seasons in 1953-55. He earned first team All-Middle Atlantic Conference honors in 1954-55.
As a professional pitcher, he played in 185 major league games over 13 seasons for the Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Senators, and New York Mets and went 20-22 with a 4.26 ERA with 268 strikeouts for his career.
Following his playing career, he served in several roles with the Phillies and went on to manage the Phillies to the 1980 world title. He later managed the New York Yankees and the New York Mets also served as president and general manager of the Chicago Cubs.
He received UD’s highest honor, the Medal of Distinction, in 1992 and was inducted into the statewide Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1983 and Delaware Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994.
He passed away in 2017 at the age of 82.
