DAVID G. “DAVE” DEWALT
Wrestling (1982-86)
Few University of Delaware athletes have been as dominant in their sport as Dave DeWalt was as a 177 and 190 lb. wrestler in 1982-86.
A four-year standout from Laureldale, Pa., DeWalt was nearly unbeatable on the mats, setting 12 school records during his career under UD Hall of Fame head coach Paul Billy.
He posted a career record of 101-9, winning 39 straight at one point, and established school standards for career pins (31), career dual points (310), fastest pin (12 seconds), and wins in a season (28 in both 1983-84 and 1984-85).
After posting an 18-4 record as a freshman, he went 28-1 as a sophomore and was named Outstanding Wrestler when he won titles at the Delaware Invitational and Salisbury Invitational and went on to capture the East Coast Conference 177 lb. individual title and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
As a junior, he went 28-2, won three regular season tournament titles, and again captured the ECC 177 lb. crown, advancing to the NCAA Tournament. In his final season, he posted a record of 27-2, won his third straight ECC title, this time at the 190 lb. class, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament at the University of Iowa where he earned a seventh place finish and became the first individual sport athlete in UD history to garner All-American honors.
A 1986 University of Delaware graduate and winner of a University Presidential Citation for Outstanding Achievement, he earned the UD Outstanding Senior Male Athlete of the Year award in 1985-86. He later qualified for the 1988 Olympic Trials.
The first wrestler to be inducted into the Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame, Dave has enjoyed an outstanding business career as CEO of several companies. He also has participated in half marathons, triathlons, and 24-hour relays.
