DAVID L. “DAVE” SYSKO
Men’s Basketball (1961-64)
One of the most prolific scorers in UD men’s basketball history, Dave Sysko led the Blue Hens to outstanding success during the early 1960’s.
A native of Penn Grove, N.J., the 6-5 Sysko led UD Hall of Fame head coach Irv Wisniewski’s squads to a three-year mark of 45-23, including a school-record 18 wins in 1961-62.
A three-year starter, he led the Middle Atlantic Conference in scoring in 1963-64 when he set a school record with a 23.9 points per game average and earned honorable mention All-American and first team All-MAC honors.
He averaged 19.2 points (No. 3 at UD) and 9.5 rebounds per game for his career and his 45-point effort vs. Lafayette in 1964 remains a modern UD single game record.
He set the UD career scoring record with 1,269 points and his 630 rebounds placed him No. 4 at Delaware.
A 1964 Delaware graduate, he has also been active with community youth athletics and leadership programs.
After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and was named to the All-Army Team in 1965-66 & 1966-67. In 1966-67, he was named to the All-Military Services Team. Dave was a member of the NBA Baltimore Bullets Training Camp in 1967. He is a member of the Delaware Basketball Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Delaware Sports Museum & Hall of Fame in 2009.
