For nearly 50 years, Elbert used both his voice and his pen to chronicle the rich history of University of Delaware athletics like no one else ever has.
Affiliated with the University since his days as a student in the early 1950’s, Elbert served as Sports Information Director in 1952-54 and as Alumni Director in 1956-85. He is best known as the “Voice of Blue Hen Football”, having served as public address announcer for Blue Hen football games for 49 years from 1953 (a year after Delaware Stadium opened) until 2001.
A gifted writer and diligent researcher, Elbert penned countless articles and stories regarding the history of Delaware athletics and published two popular books on Delaware football. Elbert earned his bachelor’s degree in 1952 and his master’s degree in 1959 from Delaware.
A native Delawarean, among his publications are “Fast Horses and Sporting Blood” (1964), “One Hundred Years of Delaware Football” (1989), “The Blue Rocks Past and Present” (2000), and “A History of Newark Country Club, 1921-1971” (1971).
He wrote numerous articles and essays for the Wilmington News Journal, NewArk Post, the Blue Hen Messenger, and the Blue Hen Gridder and recorded previews of sporting events on WDEL Radio.
An avid golfer, Elbert was a five-time winner of the Newark Country Club’s Senior Men’s Golf Championship. He was also inducted into the UD Wall of Fame in 2003.
He passed away at the age of 90 in 2016.
