RICHARD G. "GARDY" KAHOE
(1950-2010)
Football (1969-71)
One of the top running backs in Delaware's rich football tradition, Gardy Kahoe led the Blue Hens to outstanding success during his stellar three-year varsity career in 1969-70.
A native of Lafayette Hills, Pa. and a 1973 Delaware graduate, Kahoe played on teams that posted a combined three-year record of 28-5 under Hall of Fame head coach Tubby Raymond.
Kahoe spearheaded a Blue Hen running attack that dominated opposing defenses and ranked among the top backfields in the country. During that three-year span, Delaware teams scored 30 or more points in a game 26 times, captured the Middle Atlantic Conference championship in 1969, earned three Lambert Cup trophies, cruised to three Boardwalk Bowl victories in Atlantic City, N.J., and won a national title.
For his career, Kahoe rushed for 2,374 yards and 33 touchdowns and averaged 6.66 yard per carry and 71.9 yards rushing per game. His rushing yards and touchdowns both ranked No. 2 all-time at Delaware when he graduated while his yard per carry average ranked third. In addition, he rushed for over 100 yards in a game 12 times, the No. 2 all-time total at that point.
As a sophomore in 1969, he played a backup role but rushed for 230 yards and helped lead Delaware to a 9-2 record, the Middle Atlantic Conference title, a Boardwalk Bowl victory over North Carolina Central, and the Lambert Cup Trophy as the top small college team in the East.
As a junior in 1970, he rushed for 816 yards and averaged 7.7 yards per carry as the Hens went 9-2, downed Morgan State in the Boardwalk Bowl, and once again won the Lambert Cup.
He enjoyed his finest season as a senior in 1971 when he rushed for school records of 1,328 yards and 24 touchdowns and was a consensus first team All-American, honored by the Associated Press, United Press International, and the American Football Coaches Association. He led the team to a 10-1 record, including a 72-22 thumping of C.W. Post in the Boardwalk Bowl, and the school's third small college national title. He earned a tryout with the National Football League's Denver Broncos following graduation.
He passed away in 2010.
