Women's Lacrosse (1981-84)
The most prolific scorer in women's collegiate lacrosse history during her career at Delaware, Karen Emas had few equals on the field.
During her career from 1981-84 at Delaware under Hall of Fame head coach Janet Smith, Emas scored a national record 310 goals and 420 points and led Delaware to three straight national titles in 1981-83. She earned Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association (IWLCA) All-American honors three times, was a member of the U.S. National Team, and was the 1983-84 UD Outstanding Senior Female Athlete. She also was named the East Coast Conference Player of the Year in 1983 and 1984.
She was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2001 and was named to the NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse 25th Anniversary Team.
A prolific scorer, she tallied 64 goals as a freshman in 1981, 63 as a sophomore in 1982, 95 as a junior in 1983, and a then NCAA record 98 as a senior in 1984. She scored eight or more goals in a game nine times and scored at least one goal in 70 straight games.
While at Delaware, she led lacrosse teams to a four-year mark of 60-9-1, which included capturing the Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) national titles in 1981 and 1982, an NCAA Division I national title in 1983, and a third place finish at the NCAA Tournament in 1984 when she served as team co-captain. She also led the team to back-to-back East Coast Conference championships in 1983 and 1984 with a perfect 12-0 record.
She joined the faculty at Swarthmore (Pa.) College in 1990. In addition to coaching lacrosse at the NCAA Division III institution, she is the Athletic Department's Senior Woman Administrator and a professor of physical education and became the head lacrosse coach in 1993.
