LIZA SHOEMAKER
Women's Lacrosse (1995-98)
Liza Shoemaker was a stalwart midfielder during her All-American career with the Blue Hens women’s lacrosse team from 1995-98 and was an honors graduate.
A native of and a 1996 Delaware honors graduate, Shoemaker led the Blue Hens to a four-year mark of 43-28 under National Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame member Denise Wescott. Delaware went 23-8 in league play during that span and captured two league titles.
After leading the squad to a North Atlantic Conference Tournament runner-up finish in 1995, Shoemaker led the Blue Hens to a 14-6 mark in 1997 and a 14-4 slate in 1998 with both teams winning the America East conference tournament and earning Top 15 national rankings. She served as co-captain of the 1998 squad.
She earned All-American honors on four ocassions, being named second team All-American by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) in 1998, third team All-American by the IWLCA in both 1996 and 1997, and first team All-American by the U.S. Women's Lacrosse Association in 1988.
In addition, she was named the 1995 NAC Rookie of the Year, earned first team All-America East conference honors in 1997 and 1998, and America East Tournament Most Valuable Players laurels in 1997 and 1998. She scored 60 career goals.
She played for the United States National team from 1997-2001 and was inducted into the Baltimore Chapter of U.S Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2009. Shoemaker then joined the college coaching ranks and has enjoyed outstanding success as head coach at Boston University (2002-06) and currently at the University of Denver (since 2007). She has led six of those teams to the NCAA Tournament, including four times at Denver.
In addition to traveling throughout the U.S. teaching lacrosse, she has been an ambassador for the game of lacrosse all over the world. In 1995, she traveled to Tokyo, Japan, to teach the sport to Japanese university students.
