MICHAEL "MIKE" RENNA
Football (1987-89)
A dominating force for the Delaware football team in the mid-1980's, Mike Renna was one of the nation's most-feared defensive lineman during his tenure with the Blue Hens.
A native of Princeton, N.J., Mike starred for four seasons under Hall of Fame head coach Tubby Raymond and led the Blue Hens to a three-year mark of 19-15 in 1987-89 that included a 7-5 record, Yankee Conference title, and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 1988 and a 7-4 mark in 1989.
He earned All-American honors during his final two seasons when he was a first team pick by the American Football Coaches Association and honorable mention pick by the Associated in 1988, and a first team pick by the AFCA, the Associated Press, and The Sports Network in 1989. He also earned first team All-East (ECAC) honors twice and first team All-Yankee Conference laurels twice.
Renna posted 14 career sacks, ranking No. 8 on the all-time UD list upon graduation, and his 37 career tackles for loss set a UD standard. His 16 tackles for loss as a senior in 1989 was the second highest total ever recorded.
He went on to play professionally for three seasons from 1991-93, including tryout stints with the National Football League Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers, a season with London Monarchs of the World League of American Football in 1991, and a year with the the Charlotte Rage of the Arena Football League in 1993.
He earned his degree from Delaware in 1989 and went on to earn his master's degree from Cornell University. He has gone on to a successful business career in New Jersey and currently serves as president and CEO of South Jersey Industries, a public utility company.
