MILTON R. “MILT” ROBERTS
(1918-91)
Men’s Lacrosse Co-Founder & Head Coach (1950-57)
Recognized as the “Father of Lacrosse” in the state of Delaware, Roberts dedicated his life to the sport that he loved.
He was an outstanding player, teacher, promoter, and scholar of the game of lacrosse. He was an All-American player at Johns Hopkins University and led the Blue Jays to the 1941 national title and also played in the 1946 North-South All-Star Game.
He co-founded the UD men’s lacrosse program with fellow UD Athletics Hall of Famer Harry Rawstrom in 1949 and served as head coach for eight years from 1950-57, leading the 1956 team to a 7-3 record and a No. 17 national ranking. He served as head coach of the North-South All-Star Game in 1956 and was an assistant coach in 1950 and 1955.
He later settled in Lewes, Del. and played a prominent role in the development of lacrosse at the high school level. He established the first public high school lacrosse team at Cape Henlopen High School in 1979 and coached there for three seasons.
A noted historian of the game, he co-authored The Lacrosse Story, the first comprehensive history of the sport in 1965. Roberts became the first Delawarean inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1981 and was inducted into the state of Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. A lacrosse scholarship at the University of Delaware is named in his honor.
He was a 1948 graduate of Johns Hopkins and earned three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart for his military service. He passed away in 1991 at the age of 72.
