PATRICIA A. “PATTY” FREEMAN
Softball (1982-85)

A dominating pitcher for the Blue Hens in 1982-85, Patty Freeman hurled a gem almost every time she stepped into the circle during her four-year career.

Playing for head coach B.J. Ferguson, she led the Hens to a four-year record of 66-51 as Delaware won the East Coast Conference title in 1984, tied for the regular season championship in 1983, was runner-up in 1985, and finished third at the EAIAW regionals as a freshman in 1982.

She set virtually every school pitching record during her career and many of the marks lasted for nearly 20 years. A native of Philadelphia, Pa., she posted a career record of 37-29 with an earned run average of 1.24 and among her school records were career strikeouts (168), strikeouts in a game (14), wins in a season (14), season and career shutouts, and season and career complete games.

She also pitched three no-hitters during her career and earned first team All-ECC honors in 1983 and 1985.

Following her playing career, the 1985 Delaware graduate joined the coaching ranks and served as an assistant softball coach at Temple and Drexel and as head coach at Drexel in 1993-99, earning league Coach of the Year honors in 1996. She received her master’s degree in sports administration from Temple in 1992.
