STEVE STEINWEDEL
Men's Basketball Head Coach (1985-95)
Steve Steinwedel directed the rebirth of the University of Delaware men’s basketball program during his head coaching career from 1985-95, leading the Blue Hens to unprecedented success in the conference and to multiple NCAA Division I championship tournament appearances.
The winningest coach in school history, Steinwedel led the Blue Hens to a 10-year mark of 163-121 that included seven straight winning seasons, two conference titles, and the team’s first two NCAA tournament appearances, in 1992 and 1993.
Taking over a long-suffering program that had posted just one winning seasons over the previous 11 campaigns, Steinwedel led his first two teams to marks of 11-16 and 12-16 before reeling off seven straight winning seasons.
He led the 1987-88 squad to a then-school record 19 wins and put it all together in 1991-92 when he guided the Blue Hens to a 27-4 record, which included a perfect 14-0 mark in America East play, a school-record 20-game win streak, an America East Tournament title, and Delaware's first-ever berth into the NCAA Tournament. He was named the NABC District Coach of the Year and NAC Coach of the Year following the season.
Delaware followed with another stellar campaign in 1998-99 when the Hens put together a 22-8 mark, won the America East Tournament title, and returned to the NCAA Tournament.
A native of Seymour, Ind. and a 1975 graduate of Mississippi State University, Steinwedel served as an assistant coach at Stetson, West Virginia, Duke, and South Carolina before arriving at Delaware prior to the 1985-86 season.
Four of his former players - NBA draftee Spencer Dunkley, Mark Murray, Alex Coles, and Greg Smith - are members of the UD Athletics Hall of Fame.
