Women's Tennis Wraps Up Second Weekend at Cissie Leary Invitational

Delaware was successful in doubles, advancing three doubles pairs to the second round of the draws.
Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom and Dorothy Safron (at right) paired up and reached the Round of 16 with an 8-4 win over Penn State University's Kristen Roth and Maria Prishlyak. Samantha Carnall and Christina Harrington, a senior/freshman combination, won their first match 8-4 over Alexandra Bell and Nicole Pivonka of Drexel.
Sophomore Olivia Heim and freshman Kim Milla joined forces to be the third Hen pairing to reach the second round, knocking off Drexel's Zeynep Mafa and Emma Brook 8-7 (7-6)(3)).
In the singles consolation bracket, Safron advanced to the third round before bowing out. Safron cruised past Aysenil Orhon 6-0, 6-2 to reach the second round. In her second match of the bracket, Safron fought hard, eventually knocking off Daniela DePaoli 6-4, 7-6 (4). In the end, Ryann Young proved too much for Safron, who fell 6-3, 6-4 in the third round.
Heim reached the second round of singles consolation action, winning in a tiebreaker 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 against Emma Whitfield. Heim fell to eventual quarterfinalist Katarina Kovacevic 6-3, 6-0 in the second round.
The Blue Hens return to action this weekend when they again travel to Philadelphia, this thime to take part in the Saint Joseph's University Invitational. The two-day event, which opens action on Saturday, will be held both days at the SJU Tennis Complex.
