“I'm very pleased with how we approached today's game let alone the entire series,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said of his squad's performance. “I wanted to see us play a cleaner game today and we did.
The Gold squad jumped out early by plating two runs in the top of the first inning highlighted by Jimmy Yezzo's (at right) two-run home run.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Blue squad answered back with two runs of their own on a two-run home run by Nick Ferdinand. Alex Mottle smashed a two-run homer in the third frame for the Blue squad and that is all the runs they would need.
Standouts offensively for the Blue squad were Ferdinand, who had that first inning, two-run home run and Mottle's two-run homer in the third inning. On the mound for the Blue squad, starter Chad Kuhl yielded one earned run on 4 hits, 1 walk and 1 strikeout in three innings on the mound. Reliever Eric Buckland yielded one earned run on 4 hits, 1 walk and 1 strikeout in three innings pitched.
For the Gold squad, Yezzo had the two-run home run in the first inning and Zach Lopes went 2-for-2 with one stolen base. For the Gold squad, starter Mike Gillespie tossed four hitless innings on the mound while allowing two walks and five strikeouts. Reliever Steve Richter kept the Blue squad in check with two hitless innings and three strikeouts.
“Everyone on the team has worked their tails off this Fall and we are a better ball club because of it,” Sherman added. “Now we can focus on finishing the Fall on a high note and feeling good about ourselves heading into the upcoming season.”
Up next for the University of Delaware baseball team will be their first fall ball game against another school as Wilmington University visits Bob Hannah Stadium Sunday, October 21, with first pitch is set for 11 a.m.
The Blue Hens will conclude their fall schedule on Friday, October 26 at 2 p.m. when UD hosts Harford Community College at Bob Hannah Stadium.
