University of Delaware Netters Swept by James Madison; Women Fall by 6-1 Tally

NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Delaware men's and women's tennis squads were defeated by James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association action Friday night at Old Dominion's Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
Despite winning at the No. 1 doubles spot and taking a pair of singles matches to tiebreakers, the Delaware men (5-6, 1-2) dropped a 7-0 decision to James Madison. The Dukes reached .500 on the season, improving to 7-7 overall and 1-1 in CAA action. James Madison swept all six singles matches and captured all two doubles matches for the victory.
The Delaware women (6-3, 1-1) had a three-match win streak snapped as James Madison (9-3, 1-1) defeated the Blue Hens 6-1. Delaware put up a gutsy effort in singles play, taking three matches to tiebreakers, but the Hens were unable to earn a singles point. Doubles play proved to be more successful for Delaware as the Hens were victorious in two doubles flights to earn the point.
On the men's side, Adam Lawton (at right) won his first set against JMU's Ryan Pool, 6-1, before dropping the next two sets, 1-6, 9-11. Nolan Gelman was the second Blue Hen to battle to the tiebreaker with JMU's Hugo Ramadier, 1-6, 6-3, 3-6.
In doubles, Troy Beneck and Lawton earned a victory at the No. 1 spot for the Blue Hens, but JMU earned the doubles point after victories at No. 2 and No. 3.
In women's singles action, Delaware's Dorothy Safron, Courtney Fenimore, and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom each battled to the tiebreaker set but were unable to produce singles points. Freshman Kimberly Milla (at left) had a seven-match win steak halted as she dropped a 6-1, 6-3 verdict to JMU's Megan Douglass at the No. 5 spot.
The women found success in doubles play, earning the point following an 8-6 victory for the Safron-Fenimore duo at No. 2, and an 8-5 win for Olivia Heim and Amanda Halstrom at No. 2.
Both teams will look to bounce back as the Hens continue CAA action in Norfolk this weekend. The men take on William & Mary at 5 p.m. Saturday while the women face UNCW at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
