Delaware Netters Sweep Drexel on Senior Day in CAA Action as Women Grab 4-3 Victory

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's and women's tennis teams concluded their home schedule on Saturday as the Blue Hens swept Drexel in Colonial Athletic Association action on Senior Day at the Delaware Field House Courts
The Delaware men (6-7, 2-3) swept the Dragons in doubles play and captured four singles victories to earn a 5-2 win over Drexel (9-6, 1-1).
“We had a strong doubles showing today,” said Delaware head coach Laura Travis. “In singles, we played well at the important times.”
The singles points came from Adam Lawton at the No. 2 spot, Nolan Gelman at No. 4, Ryan Kent at No. 5, and Jason Derene at No. 6. Derene came back from a 1-0 deficit against Drexel's Paul Stauskas, falling 2-6 in the first set before taking the next two, 6-4, 10-3
Already the all-time school leader for career doubles wins, senior Andre Vorobyov (bottom left) earned his 58th individual career doubles victory as he partnered with Ryan Kent at the No. 2 spot. Adam Lawton and Troy Beneck were victorious at the top spot, while Nolan Gelman and Evan Andrews closed out the doubles sweep with a victory at No. 3.
The Delaware women (7-4, 2-2) swept the top four singles spots and captured just one doubles victory to edge the Dragons, 4-3. Drexel had a five match win streak halted by the Hens as the Dragons fell to 11-7 overall and 2-1 in CAA action.
“We made a huge comeback after losing the doubles point,” said Travis. “The seniors played well when it counted most.”
Senior Samantha Carnall (top right) made a huge comeback at the top singles spot for the Blue Hens, falling 2-6 in the first set to Drexel's Sonja Stosic before taking over the second set, 6-3, and winning the tiebreaker, 6-4.
Also successful in singles play for the women was Dorothy Safron at No. 2, Courtney Fenimore at No. 3, and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom at No. 4.
In doubles play, the Safron and Fenimore duo came out with a win for the Hens at the second flight, but Delaware would surrender the doubles point after falling in the top and third flights.
Both the men and women will return to action when the Blue Hens head to Mount St. Mary's on April 10 for a 1 p.m. non-league match.
