University of Delaware?s Giacchino Named Colonial Athletic Association?s Baseball Rookie of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Delaware was honored by the Colonial Athletic Association for the third straight week on Monday as Blue Hens redshirt-freshman outfielder Joe Giacchino was named CAA Rookie of the Week for his performance last week.
Giacchino, a redshirt freshman from West Chester, Pa. (Malvern Prep), hit .600 (6-10) with five RBI and two runs scored during UD's three-game weekend series against Northeastern. He collected his first five-hit, four RBI game in Delaware's 10-3 victory over the Huskies on Saturday. '
The 6-1 outfielder finished the regular season with a .273 (21-77) batting average with three doubles, 10 RBI and 12 runs scored in 34 games this spring.
Giacchino becomes the sixth Blue Hen player honored this spring by the CAA, including senior right-handed pitcher Corey Crispell and sophomore right-handed pitcher Chad Kuhl, who were named CAA Pitchers of the Week last two weeks.
Other Delaware CAA baseball award winners this season include senior pitcher Eric Young was (CAA Pitcher of the Week on Mar. 5), freshman outfielder Tyler Powell (CAA Rookie of the Week on Feb. 28), and sophomore infielder Jimmy Yezzo (CAA Player of the Week on Apr. 16).
This week, Giacchino and the Blue Hens (27-25, 17-13 CAA) will begin post-season play at the CAA Tournament in Harrisionburg, Va. The No. 3 seed Blue Hens will face the No. 6 seed Towson Tigers in the second game of the opening round of the tournament. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. at James Madison's Veterans Memorial Park.
