Athlete of the Week: Michaela Patzner

NEWARK, Del. -- Freshman Michaela Patzner, who scored two goals in her collegiate debut for the University of Delaware field hockey squad last week, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week award for the period ending August 27.
Patzner (at left in photo) is the first weekly winner of the honor this season. The award will be announced each Monday throughout the academic year.
The University of Delaware field hockey squad nearly pulled off the upset in its season opener Friday night at Rullo Stadium, but No. 14 ranked Boston University got two late goals from Jacinda McLeod, including the game-winner in overtime, to post a 4-3 non-league victory.
Delaware, playing its second season under head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof, had taken a 3-2 lead on a goal by Nikki Onorato with 19:07 left in the second half, but McLeod tied the game on a penalty stroke with 1:35 left in regulation and then won the game on a goal just 5:28 into the extra session.
Delaware got a big effort from freshman midfielder Patzner (at right), who scored two goals in her collegiate debut, including the first goal of the game just four minutes and 48 seconds into the contest. The Rosenheim, Germany (Karolinen Gymnasium High School) product became the first Delaware player to score two goals in her collegiate debut since All-American Casey Howard tallied twice in her debut vs. Pacific in 2005.
Delaware (0-2) followed the Boston University with another heartbreaker on Sunday as the Hens fell 4-3 in a shootout with No. 19 ranked Albany. The teams played to a 3-3 deadlock in regulation and went scoreless through two 15-minute overtime periods, setting up the shootout. Albany won the shootout, scoring on each of their first three attempts on goal while Delaware could not deliver on its three attempts in the best of five format.
Patzner an English major at Delaware, will lead the Blue Hen into a pair of non-league games this weekend in Michigan. Delaware will take on Central Michigan on Aug. 31 at 11:30 a.m. at Ann Arbor, Mich. and follow the next day vs. the University of Michigan at 2 p.m.
