NEWARK, Del. – Nick Ferdinand's power at the plate and Adam Davis' command on the mound led the University of Delaware baseball team to a 7-1 victory over George Mason in game two of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association weekend series Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Delaware (21-8, 8-3 CAA) extended its winning streak to 11 games and won its eighth straight over George Mason (12-19, 4-10 CAA), who has now lost its last seven games. The Blue Hens eclipsed the 10-game winning streak last set by the 2006 squad and now are eying the 13-game winning streak the 2004 UD team produced.
“Things are going well right now for us and we continue to ride this wave,” said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman, whose team scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the series opener 11-8 Friday afternoon.
The Hens took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Joe Giacchino lined a leadoff triple to center field and then scored on a wild pitch. Delaware 's offense continued to score runs with two-run innings in the fourth, sixth and seventh frames.
Delaware tallied eight hits in the victory as Ferdinand and DJ Long each pocketed two base knocks apiece. Ferdinand launched his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh inning, a two-run shot over the left field wall for UD's final runs of the game.
Jimmy Yezzo's on-base streak increased to 41 games, but he saw his hitting streak end at 11 games. Brock Niggebrugge's hitting streak extended to 10 games on the season with a 1-for-4 performance at the plate.
Blue Hen starter Davis (4-3) set the tone on the mound and earned his fourth victory of the season. He held the Patriots to one earned run on eight hits, walked one, and had four strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched.
“Davis was really good and gave a solid college performance,” said Sherman. “He challenged the strike zone and hit his spots using his fastball and slider.”
Eric Sawyer and Eric Buckland completed the final 2.1 innings on the mound and held George Mason scoreless with one hit, one walk and three strikeouts.
“We continue to use the bullpen depending on the situations presented in the game,” said Sherman. “Sawyer came in and closed out the seventh inning and then Buckland got the final five outs that clinched the win.”
George Mason produced nine hits in the loss and scored its only run in the second inning when Anthony Montefusco lined a double to right field, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a wild pitch. Tommy Vitalletti, Montefusco and Leemhuis led GMU with two hits apiece.
Montefusco (2-4) suffered the loss for the Patriots after he was charged with seven runs (six earned) on eight hits, three walks, and nine strikeouts in seven innings.
Delaware looks for the series sweep of George Mason in the CAA weekend series finale on Sunday, April 7, at 1 pm at Bob Hannah Stadium.
“This team has been in this situation before, winning the first two games of a series,” said Sherman. “We now need to be able to finish a series without a drop in execution or effort.”
The Blue Hens will send right-hander Matt Soren (1-1, 2.02 ERA) to the mound while the Patriots turn to right-hander John Williams (2-1, 8.57 ERA).
