NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware field hockey squad got its first action against a different colored uniform Saturday afternoon as the Blue Hens took on American University at Rullo Stadium.
The two teams went into the half at a 0-0 tie before Alex McMackin put the Eagles on board with a penalty corner.
With less than three minutes remaining in the exhibition, freshman Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands) scored off of a penalty corner while senior Toni Popinko (Oxford, N.J.) followed with another goal less than a minute later to give the Hens a 2-1 advantage.
Once regulation time was complete, the two teams competed in a 10-minute OT period, where Natalie Konerth tied the game at 2-2 for AU.
To gain more experience, Delaware and American each completed two shootouts, with the Eagles coming out on top, 6-4.
The Blue Hens host one more exhibition contest next Tuesday against Columbia before opening the season on the road next weekend.
UD, in its third season under head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof, kick off the 2013 campaign at Boston University as the Hens take on Ohio on Sept. 1 and the Terriers on Sept. 2. Delaware returns home Sept. 6-8 to host Central Michigan and Lafayette at Rullo Stadium.
Admittance to all home Delaware field hockey games is free and open to the public.
