NEWARK, Del. – Freshman Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands) and Kasey Prettyman (Newark, Del.) (at right) each scored two goals Wednesday afternoon as the University of Delaware field hockey team wrapped up its exhibition play with a 7-0 victory against Columbia at Rullo Stadium.
The Hens took a 5-0 lead at halftime, including four goals within a four-minute span. Both teams were held scoreless in the second half until sophomore Allie Mikelson (Macungie, Pa.) gave Delaware a 6-0 advantage with less than four minutes left in regulation.
With the exhibition format, the two teams went head-to-head in two five-minute overtime periods, where Prettyman added her second goal of the afternoon.
Senior Heather Hartman (Fredericksburg, Va.) added three assists for the Blue Hens while classmate Sarah Scher (Pocomoke, Md.) collected four saves.
UD outscored the Lions in a shootout, 4-2, before the afternoon was halted due to lightning.
“It was great to wrap up the exhibition portion of our season with a strong showing,” stated third-year head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. “It's good to see where we are against different competition and it's nice to see that we have taken a step forward from Saturday's exhibition against American.”
The Blue Hens open the 2013 season Sunday as they take on Ohio University at Boston University before matching up with the Terriers on Monday. Delaware returns home Sept. 6-8 to host Central Michigan and Lafayette at Rullo Stadium.
Admittance to all home Delaware field hockey games is free and open to the public.
