Bob Shillinglaw announced on Friday.
“Our staff is extremely excited about the team's selection of Brian Kormondy and Matt Matsko as captains for the 2015 season,” said Shillinglaw, who will begin his 40th season as a college head coach and his 37th at Delaware this spring. “Both are exceptional players and lead by example. The team has made an excellent choice selecting both Brian and Matt to lead the squad this season. Their work ethic, focus, and leadership skills will help motivate and direct the team towards our goal of winning the CAA title and getting to the NCAA Tournament.”
The two will lead a team that returns a solid contingent of standout players from a squad that went 7-9 a year ago and advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament semifinals before falling to top seed Hofstra 8-6. Delaware lost six games by three goals or less and allowed less than 10 goals in a game 10 times.
A native of Highland Ranch, Colo. (Mullen High School), Kormondy is the team's top returning scorer after recording 17 goals and 13 assists a year ago. He scored multiple goals four times and had a career-high three goals in an early season win over Lafayette. For his career, he has played in 44 games with 33 starts and recorded 33 goals and 21 assists. He is a marketing and management major at Delaware.
One of just two Delaware natives on last year's squad, Matsko is a three-year letterwinner from Dover, Del. (Caesar Rodney HS) and a key contributor on Delaware's defensive unit. He played in 15 games in a reserve role in 2014 and registered 14 groundballs and nine caused turnovers. A criminal justice major, Matsko has appeared in 33 career games with 13 starts and contributed 29 groundballs.
Delaware, which will announce its 2015 schedule next week, will open the season Feb. 1 at High Point.
