RICHMOND, Va. – The Colonial Athletic Association acknowledged University of Delaware redshirt freshman Fran Orella (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) Tuesday as its field hockey Rookie of the Week.
Orella, who has filled in between the pipes for injured freshman goalie Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum), guided the Blue Hens to a 2-0 start in league play this past weekend.
Delaware opened conference action with an exciting 6-5 double overtime victory at James Madison Friday. Orella played all 97:38 minutes to lead the Hens with two saves in the team's first double overtime win since 2000.
UD followed with a 5-3 victory at William & Mary Sunday after Orella tallied five saves.
For the season, Orella has started three straight contests and recorded 248 minutes of action. The goalie is 3-0-0 with 10 saves and 2.55 goals allowed.
Orella joins Oltmans in the weekly honors as Oltmans is a two-time CAA field hockey honoree this season.
Northeastern's Emma Lamison was named the CAA Player of the Week.
The Hens continue road play with a 6 p.m. contest Friday at Princeton before facing Towson at 1 p.m. Sunday.
