NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware ran into an uncharacteristically hot-shooting Temple squad and dropped an 82-62 men's basketball decision Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens, who got a game-high 20 points from senior guard Kyle Anderson in his season debut, remained winless on the season at 0-8 while Temple, which got a big lift from a pair of transfers making their Owls debuts, improved to 7-4 on the season. Delaware is 0-8 for just the third time in school history and for the first time since 2006-07.
The Owls, who entered the game shooting just 25.9 percent from the three-point line this season, drained a season-high 16 of 33 shots (48.5 percent) from beyond the arc as they broke open a close game in the opening 10 minutes, took a 37-21 lead at the break, and cruised to the 20-point victory.
Temple, whose previous season-high for three-pointers was six, downed the Hens for the 19th straight time.
“Our game plan was to guard the lane because they had been deficient from long range, but if they're going to shoot that well, they're going to be really good,” Delaware head coach Monté Ross said. “Mo (Jeffers) did an excellent job of making good moves, being confident, and finishing inside. Kyle (Anderson) was really rusty in the first half, but he got going in the second half and that opened things up for us."
Maurice Jeffers (at left), a sophomore forward, enjoyed the best game of his career as he reached career-highs with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds and recorded his first career double-double.
Anderson, the lone returning starter from last year's NCAA Tournament team, saw his first action of the season after missing the first month of the season with a broken hand. He hit on 7 of 14 shots from the field, knocked down 4 of 9 three-pointers, and collected his fifth career 20-point game as he score 17 points after halftime.
Delaware junior forward Marvin King-Davis, playing for the first time since the season opener due to a hamstring injury, added eight points for the Hens.
Temple got 16 points each from UMass transfer Jesse Morgan and Quenton DeCosey while Will Cummings posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists and Clemson transfer Devin Coleman came off the bench to add nine points on three three-pointers. Morgan and Coleman were playing their first games for the Owls after becoming eligible following Temple's fall semester.
Delaware led 12-8 after a Korey Holden free throw with 13:19 left in the opening half but Temple reeled off seven straight points and outscored the Hens 15-2 over a span of six minutes to take control. The Owls hit three three-pointers over the final three minutes of the first half to take a 37-21 lead at the break and led by at least 14 points the entire second half.
The Hens return to action Saturday when they head to Fairleigh Dickinson for a 2 p.m. tip.
