STANFORD, Calif. – Taylor Lister's (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) first career goal couldn't have come at a better time as the freshman tallied the game-winner as the No. 18 University of Delaware field hockey squad defeated Pacific, 2-1, Saturday evening at Stanford's Varsity Turf.
With less than five minutes remaining in regulation, the Blue Hens and Tigers held a 1-1 tie before Lister came up with the ball off of a scrum in the middle of the circle and put it between the pipes for the 2-1 advantage.
Sophomore Meghan Winesett (Centreville, Va./Westfield) gave Delaware (1-1) the initial lead in the 27th minute with a goal off an assist from junior Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium).
Pacific (0-2) tied the game in the 41st minute as Hannah Bettencourt collected her first goal of the season off a penalty corner.
Freshman Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) earned her first career win with four saves.
Laura Pujade was credited with the loss for the Tigers after despite making seven saves.
HEN SCRATCHINGS
Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
“I knew the team could play quality Delaware field hockey and I was just waiting for them to show it to themselves. Today, they did this in a beautiful manner and I am very proud of them. After learning more about ourselves versus Stanford, our game versus Pacific should provide opportunities to further grow and develop together, and that is exactly what our team did. There was great energy, a high work rate, execution of game plan and true team play resulting in dominating all stat categories. Although the score was just 2-1, we were just inches away from a number of more Blue Hen goals.”
“Over our first two games we have been able to create tons of scoring opportunities, so now we just have to polish them up and the Blue Hens will enjoy scoring more goals next time around.”
“As a team we can be pleased on where we are in this young season (1-1) and after a rest day tomorrow, we will be looking forward to continuing our team growth versus Cal-Berkeley on Labor Day.”
