STANFORD, Calif. – Sophomore Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos) returned to the scoring column for the first time during the 2014 season in a big way Monday afternoon as the midfielder led the No. 18 University of Delaware field hockey squad to a 3-2 overtime victory over California at Stanford's Varsity Turf.
Peet registered the first goal of the game in the 17th minute off of a penalty corner with assists from classmate Marjelle Scheffers (Amersfoort, The Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium Johan van Oldenbarneveld) and junior Allie Mikelson (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus).
The Golden Bears (1-1) countered with two goals of their own to take a 2-1 lead following halftime.
Junior Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) tied the contest at 2-2 in the 62nd minute with her first tally of the season, also off of a penalty corner with assists from Mikelson and Scheffers, which sent the game into overtime.
Peet ended the game in the 73rd minute for the Blue Hens (2-1) after netting the goal from a cross from the left side from sophomore Meghan Winesett (Centreville, Va./Westfield).
Freshman Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) collected her second straight win after registering two saves.
Cal's Courtney Hendrickson was credited with the loss despite accumulating 10 saves.
POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
"Congrats are in place for our team as they found a way in fighting themselves back into the game and winning in OT. On the other hand, we have some work to do as our conversion rate of our scoring opportunities and corners will have to go up. Currently, we are making our own lives more complicated than we have to, but this is all a part of a young players group excited to be the best they can be. Time will provide us with growth opportunities. We are looking forward to returning home and opening up at Rullo this Friday."
