NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware field hockey squad continued its misfortune Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hens dropped a 4-2 decision to Cornell at Rullo Stadium.
The loss is the third straight for the Blue Hens, something the defending Colonial Athletic Association champions are not use to. Delaware, which had not lost three straight since November 2012, falls to 3-4 on the season.
Junior Allie Mikelson (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) tallied three defensive saves on the day to tie Michelle Drummonds' school record that was set on Oct. 17, 2010 against No. 2 Maryland. The mark is also good to tie for seventh in NCAA single-game history.
The Big Red (3-1) opened the game with a 3-0 advantage before sophomore Marjelle Scheffers (at left; Amersfoort, The Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium Johan van Oldenbarnevelt) registered her first career goal off of a rebounded penalty corner in the 31st minute.
Sophomore Michaela Patzner (below right; Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) brought the Hens within one at 3-2 in the 53rd minute as she knocked in a penalty stroke as the momentum seemed to shift Delaware's way.
Cornell had other plans for UD as Elizabeth Horak shot in an unassisted goal in the 56th minute go give the Big Red the 4-2 lead.
Freshman Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) collected three saves in the loss.
Marsia Siergiej led Cornell with two goals and an assist while Kelly Johnson posted two saves.
