NEWARK - The University of Delaware field hockey squad will welcome Special Olympics Delaware (SODE) athletes and their families to Fred P. Rullo Stadium this Sunday as the Blue Hens take on Fairfield at 1 p.m.
SODE athletes are invited to join the team on the field for starting lineups and the National Anthem and are encouraged to stay for the entire game to root on their favorite Blue Hens.
Sunday's game continues a strong relationship between Delaware field hockey and SODE as the Blue Hens host the organization's athletes annually for an 11-week fitness class during the spring season.
Rolf van de KerkhofSpecial Olympics of Delaware has provided year-round sports training and athletic competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities since 1970. The organization reaches 3,700 athletes who compete in 20 Olympic-type sports, giving them the opportunity to prove that there is nothing that cannot be overcome.
“We are eager to find meaningful ways to engage and work with the UD student-athletes,” said Lisa Smith, the Special Olympics of Delaware Director of Special Events. “This opportunity with the field hockey team is a perfect way to explore what we can do directly with the teams.”
The entire field hockey team will continue their support by attending the SODE Red Robin Tip-a-Cop fundraising event on October 25. The event will take place at three local Red Robin restaurants where law enforcement officials and Special Olympic athletes will serve as guest waiters, encouraging patrons to “tip” a donation so SODE.
