ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Freshman Matt Renzi (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon) collected his first career tournament championship Sunday as the University of Delaware men's tennis team wrapped up play at the Navy National Invitational.
Renzi finished the weekend with a 2-1 record to capture the No. 2 singles title.
In Sunday's action against the Mids, the Blue Hens tallied three total victories.
In No. 2 doubles, Renzi paired with classmate Shane Jeffray (Manasquan, N.J./Wall Township) for an 8-6 win over Navy's Tyler Burnett and Andrey Majkic.
Jeffray also recorded a singles victory by pulling out a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5) victory against Krishna Jana in the sixth flight.
Fellow freshman Colin Wong (Jalan Anggerik Eria, Malaysia) posted a 5-7, 3-0 win against Majkic in No. 7 singles.
“Today, and the weekend as a whole, we put ourselves into position to win. Unfortunately, we simply weren't able to close in on as many matches as we need to. The guys are working hard. It isn't paying off for them yet, but down the line, it will show in their results. This was a solid weekend of very competitive play. This is exactly what we need in fall play.”
