RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Delaware men's tennis team kicked off the 2015 campaign Saturday with two losses in the VCU Invitational, held at Thalhimer Tennis Center.
The Blue Hens (0-2) opened the day with a 3-2 loss to Norfolk State (1-1) before falling to Richmond (1-1) in the nightcap.
Against the Spartans, freshmen Shane Jeffray (Manasquan, N.J./Wall Township) and Colin Wong (Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia/SMK Kota Kemuning) shutout Terey Hackney and Alex Killam, 8-0, in doubles play.
NSU defeated the Hens 3-0 in singles play, with Delaware earning a victory by forfeit.
The Spiders closed the evening with a 5-0 win over the Blue Hens. In No. 2 singles, freshman Matt Renzi (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon) nearly pulled out a win, but eventually fell to Jacob Dunbar, 6-4, 6-4.
Chris Hincker“The first tournament of the spring can be a shock to the system, coming off of a long winter break. As a team, we competed much better in the second match against a tougher opponent. Every match, win or lose, is another opportunity for us to test ourselves and find the areas where we still need work. Tonight we will regroup and try to bring our A game for tomorrow, which will surely be another day of high-class competition.”
