NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware rallied from five points down over the final three minutes of regulation to extend the game and got four straight points from Marvin King-Davis (Meadowbrook/Richmond, Va.) in overtime to take control en route to a 67-64 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory over rival Towson Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Freshman Kory Holden (Bennett/Salisbury, Md.) led all scorers with 24 points and Kyle Anderson (bottom right/Newark/Newark, Ill.) and Cazmon Hayes (at left/Berry Academy/Charlotte, N.C.) each added 12 points as
the Blue Hens (3-13, 2-3 CAA) posted their second straight victory.
Hayes added eight rebounds while Maurice Jeffers (Coolidge/Washington D.C.) contributed eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds and King-Davis finished with nine points.
Towson (8-10, 1-4 CAA), which has now lost three straight and 9 of its last 10 outings, got 18 points and 10 rebounds off the bench from John Davis but could not hold on to a 56-51 lead with 3:08 left in regulation and to a 64-60 advantage with 3:12 left in overtime.
“That was a gritty, gritty performance late in the second half and in overtime,” said Delaware head coach Monté Ross. “We played like an older group and there was no panic when we got down. That is a sign of growth and development for our team. A lot of guys made winning plays down the stretch with means a great deal.”
After hitting just 10 of its first 20 free throws for the game, the Hens then went 16 for 19 the rest of the way to clinch the win. King-Davis hit two free throws with 2:19 left in overtime to tie the game at 64-64 and then put Delaware up for good with a dunk off a Holden feed with 1:07 remaining. Holden's free throw with 28 seconds then gave the Hens a three-point lead.
Towson had a last chance to knot the score again but a 30-foot three-point attempt just before the
buzzer by Timajh Parker-Rivera was way off the mark.
Delaware trailed by as many as six points early in the second half and was still down 56-51 with 3:08 left after Towson's Four McGlynn (11 points) drained a long-range three-pointer.
Holden hit two free throws with 1:41 left to narrow the gap, and after Towson's Byron Hawkins (12 points) hit one of two free throws for a 57-53 Tiger lead, Hayes drained three free throws after being fouled while attempting a corner three-pointer to cut the margin to 57-56 with 1:10 left.
Jeffers added a single free throw with 22 seconds left to knot the score at 57-57 and the game went into overtime when Barnett Harris (Gateway/Monroeville, Pa.) blocked a layup attempt by McGlynn with three seconds left.
