NEWARK, Del. – Despite leading by as much as 17, the University of Delaware women's basketball team scored just 11 points in the second stanza to fall to the College of William & Mary, 50-58, Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Tribe (7-10, 1-5 Colonial Athletic Association) outscored the Hens, 28-11, and held UD to just four field goals in the second half.
W&M slowly chipped away at Delaware's lead in the second half and held the Blue Hens (7-10, 2-4 CAA) to just one field goal for a nearly 15-minute span. Kyla Kerstetter put the Tribe up for good, 46-45, at the 1:52 mark.
UD sophomore Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J./Paterson Kennedy) drained a 3-pointer as time expired but it was too little, too late as the Tribe rallied for their first CAA win of the year.
Brown led all scorers for the third consecutive game with 19 points.
Sophomore Hannah Jardine (at left; St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) added her fourth double double of the season and second in as many games with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) also collected 10 rebounds for the Blue Hens while redshirt sophomore Jodi Salyer (Roanoke, Va./Staunton River) dished out four assists and senior Stephanie Leon (Northport, N.Y./Northport) blocked three shots.
Abby Rendle guided the Tribe with 16 points and seven rebounds while Tremba contributed 10 points and four steals.
“I have to give William & Mary credit, they kept playing and playing while we missed shots and hung our heads. The defensive end becomes huge when you're struggling to make open shots and we let up there as well. A lot of things went wrong for us today. It is frustrating and certainly hard to stomach. We had a lot of confidence and let our guard down in the second half. We played extremely well in the first half and awfully in the second half. We can't lose focus when we get a big lead and that's what we did today.”
Sophomore Hannah Jardine
“We came out in the second half and weren't ready to keep the same pace that we had going. We didn't come out with the intensity that we should have. We had open looks, but we just couldn't knock them down. Defensively, we couldn't get at the shooters and then we had some miscommunication that cost us open layups.”
Sophomore Erika Brown
“When you're up, you should be building the lead so you can shut the door instead of opening it wide up and letting them remain in the game. Towards the end, we were rushing and trying to put the ball up quickly, which led to turnovers.”
