BALTIMORE, Md. -- University of Delaware men's lacrosse standout midfielder Brian Kormondy was selected by the Ohio Machine in the sixth round of the 2015 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Draft Friday night at the Baltimore Convention Center.
Kormondy, a senior midfielder for the Blue Hens this spring, was one of 60 college seniors selected in the eighth-round draft, was the 42nd pick overall, and the fourth selection by the Machine.
Delaware has now had at least one player selected in the MLL Draft six straight years and Kormondy is the 15th UD player drafted all-time since the event was initiated in 2001. He was also one of five Colonial Athletic Association players selected, joining UMass midfielder Ryan Izzo (4th Round by Ohio), Drexel midfielder Ryan Belka (6th Round by Charlotte), and Hofstra midfielders Mike Malave (7th Round by New York) and John Reicherter (7th Round by Ohio).
A native of Highland Ranch, Colo. (Mullen High School), Kormondy is Delaware's top returning scorer after recording 17 goals and 13 assists a year ago. He scored multiple goals four times and had a career-high three goals in an early season win over Lafayette. For his career, he has played in 44 games with 33 starts and recorded 33 goals and 21 assists.
A marketing and management major at Delaware, Kormondy earned a spot on the Colonial Athletic Association preseason all-conference earlier this month. He will share co-captain duties with senior defender Matt Matsko.
He is part of a solid contingent of standout players from a squad that went 7-9 a year ago and advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament semifinals before falling to top seed Hofstra 8-6. Delaware lost six games by three goals or less and allowed less than 10 goals in a game 10 times.
The Hens will open the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 1, when Delaware heads to High Point (N.C.) for a 12 noon faceoff. The game will mark the first collegiate men's game of the season at the NCAA Division I level.
In addition to Kormondy, Izzo, and Reicherter, Ohio also selected High Point goalkeeper Austin Geisler in the seventh round and Ohio State midfielder David Planning in the eighth and final round.
The Machine, which went 8-7 last year and finished fourth in the regular season standings, will open the season Apr. 12 vs. Players who were drafted Friday will join teams following their collegiate seasons.
