NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware received double-figure scoring from five players as the Blue Hens took control in the final minutes and survived a late comeback attempt by the College of Charleston to post a 71-68 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory Saturday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Kyle Anderson led the Blue Hens with 14 points, Marvin King-Davis (below left) and Chivarsky Corbett each
netted 11, and Cazmon Hayes (at right) and Devonne Pinkard scored 10 apiece as the Blue Hens (5-16, 4-6 CAA) returned home and broke a two-game losing streak. Kory Holden added eight points and a game-high eight assists while Hayes also contributed seven rebounds and two steals.
Delaware trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half before cutting the halftime margin to 33-29 and then used a quick start in the second half to take the lead for good four minutes in.
The Hens never led by more than eight points until the final minutes when they used a 12-1 run - highlighted by a dunk and three-point shot from Anderson - to take a 65-50 advantage with 2:30 left.
The Cougars (6-17, 1-9 CAA), who fell for the fifth straight game and for the 13th time in the last 14 outings, made a valiant comeback attempt, outscoring Delaware 18-6 over the final two minutes before coming up short.
Joe Chealey hit a three-pointer with two seconds left for the final score but Delaware ran out the clock to seal the win.
“It was a very good win for us, obviously,” said Delaware head coach Monté Ross. “We wanted to get to four CAA wins, and 1-0 in the back half of the league schedule, and we were able to do that. I
couldn't be prouder of the defensive effort in the second half, we really made them work and take tough shots every single time down. We put a renewed emphasis on our defensive game the last couple days, and I was really proud of the way the guys played defense more than anything else.”
“This was a really tough game, and to come out and get a win at home was great,” said Anderson, who reached double figures for the 13th time in his 14 games this season. “We are improving and were better defensively today. We wanted to force them to take tough shots, and we were able to do that.”
College of Charleston also put four scorers in double figures led by Canyon Barry's 17 points, a career-high 16 by Cameron Johnson, and 14 from Cameron Johnson. Adjehi Baru had 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds before fouling out in the final minute.
