NEWARK, Del. -- It was quite a week for University of Delaware redshirt freshman running back Thomas Jefferson.
After picking up a career-high 163 yards rushing and scoring two touchdowns in his first career start last Saturday in a 41-14 setback to FCS North Carolina, Jefferson was honored by three separate organizations for his outstanding exploits.
The 6-2, 215 lb. criminal justice major from Prospect Park, N.J. (Passaic Tech High School), was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week on Monday, was named to the STATS National Weekly Rookie of the Week Honor Roll on Tuesday, and this Thursday was selected as the Corvais/Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Eastern FCS Rookie of the Week.
Jefferson had a career day as he carried 22 times and led all rushers with 163 yards, the most by a UD freshman since 2011. He scored two touchdowns, including a 72-yard scamper on the second play of the game from scrimmage that was the longest run ever by UD freshman and gave Delaware a quick 7-0 lead.
In addition to Jefferson, also honored by the CAA were Offensive Player of the Week QB Vad Lee from James Madison, Defensive Player of the Week LB Andrew Ankrah of James Madison, and Special Teams Player of the Week P Jon Martin of Albany. Those four were also honored by the ECAC.
Delaware (1-3, 0-1 CAA) will continue action on Saturday when the Blue Hens host CAA rival #25/22 William & Mary at 7:30 p.m. at Delaware Stadium. Plenty of great tickets remain by calling 302-831-2257 or visiting www.bluehens.com and clicking on “Tickets” at the top of the page.
