NEWARK, Del. -- Be Kind. Seems simple right?
In conjunction with National Bullying Prevention Month, the University of Delaware Blue Hens have teamed up with local elementary schools to encourage their students to take the pledge to Be A HERO – (H)ens (E)ncouraging (R)espect to (O)thers – and be positive throughout the day, filling their own Blue Hens Buckets with acts of kindness towards others during the month of October.
Based off the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids by Carol McCloud, each individual is encouraged to fill others' buckets and in turn fill their own, creating a positive and accepting environment.
In its pilot year, program invitations were sent to local principals encouraging teachers to signup online to confirm their classroom participation. Blue Hens Buckets and classroom HERO posters were then provided to 110 local classrooms with nearly 2,800 HERO participants.
To celebrate those that complete a minimum of six acts of kindness over the three-week challenge period (Oct. 9 – Oct. 30), positive power perks will be awarded to both the teachers leading the charge and the students themselves.
Students that turn in filled Blue Hens Buckets to their participating teachers will each receive a Be A HERO program certificate, two (2) complimentary tickets to the November 14 Blue Hens vs. James Madison Dukes football game at Delaware Stadium, eligibility to be one of the first 1,000 to receive an official HERO cape on gameday, and on-field recognition with fellow HERO challenge participants.
The Christina School District observed a district-wide 6th Annual Day of Kindness event on Friday, Oct. 16, a day devoted to enhancing student, teacher, staff, and parent understanding of the importance of encouraging positive behavior in school and in life.
The Day of Kindness helped highlight how everyone in the Christina School District can help make schools places where students are excited about learning, where parents and the community are welcome, and where administrators, teachers, and staff support all students so that they may achieve their very best.
A Caravan of Blue Hens joined Thurgood Marshall Elementary School in Newark, Del. to help celebrate their day and interact with the classes that are currently participating in the Be A HERO challenge to encourage them to keep bucket filling.
The Be A HERO program details, bucket filler ideas, bucket dipper don'ts, and Blue Hens HERO videos showcasing positive behavior can be found at www.BlueHens.com/BeAHero.
You don't have to be a super hero to be an everyday HERO. Be Kind. Make A Difference.
