NEWARK, Del. – Junior All-American Guillermo Delgado (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jose Luis Sampedro) posted a career-best five points Wednesday evening at a rainy Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium as Delaware defeated James Madison, 4-0.
The win was the first against the Dukes in Newark since the 2009 season. With the victory, the Hens improve to 8-6-3 overall and 4-2-1 in league play while JMU drops to 3-9-4 on the year and 2-3-1 in the CAA. Delaware also moved into third in the CAA standings with 13 points.
Delgado notched the game's first goal in the 17th minute off an assist from junior Thomas de Villardi (Vincennes, France/Lycee Notre-dame Guingamp).
The Blue Hens scored early and often to begin the second half of play as senior Ben Sampson (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) notched his second goal of the season in the 51st minute on a header off a corner kick from sophomore Carlos Perales (L'Alcúdia de Crespins, Spain/Colegio Claret Xàtiva).
Senior Nick DiRienzo (at left; Hockessin, Del./Wilmington Charter) collected his first goal of the year just three minutes later as Delgado assisted on 18-yard shot.
Delgado concluded the scoring in the 58th minute with a breakaway goal. Senior Joe Dipre (Betchworth, England/London Freemen's School) picked up his 15th career assist on the play.
Redshirt freshman Todd Morton (at right; West Chester, Pa./Henderson) collecte
d two saves in his fourth shutout of the year while the Blue Hens picked up two team saves in the win.
Morton's older brother, Kyle, registered four saves as the starting goalie for the Dukes.
“I am thrilled to send our two seniors out with such a nice gift as a win. Joe Dipre and Nick DiRienzo have been great ambassadors for our program, so for Joe to get an assist and Nick to get a goal to cap it all off was tremendous. This is a tough league and to be fair to JMU, they're missing a bunch of forwards and we capitalized off that.”
Senior Nick DiRienzo
“It felt great to get this win. We've been clicking on all cylinders recently. We are heating up at the right time, which is good going into the CAA Tournament in the next couple of weeks.”
[On first goal of season]: “I was one v one with the keeper and I saw that he was out pretty far. It was a bit risky and pretty ambitious on my part, but luckily it went in.”
