NEWARK, Del. – Be a HERO challenge accepted.
The Blue Hens were proud to see all of the caped HEROes united at Delaware Stadium Nov. 14 for the Delaware football vs. James Madison home finale game.
Of the 110 local classrooms and nearly 2,800 HERO – (H)ens (E)ncouraging (R)espect to (O)thers – participants who requested to complete the Be A HERO challenge, over 1,200 students from 66 classrooms filled their Blue Hens Buckets with a minimum of six acts of kindness during the month of October.
In its pilot year, the overwhelming positive feedback and appreciation from parents and teachers was tremendous, and the smiles from the HEROes themselves were infectious.
“The Be A HERO Program was amazing. The staff and volunteers gave our family and friends an experience that we will never forget!” said Kelly Rivera, a Thurgood Marshall Elementary School fourth grade parent. “My daughter was over the moon. Everything was so organized. The kids truly thought they were super heroes.”
Students who filled their Blue Hens Buckets received a Be A HERO program certificate and two complimentary tickets to the football game. On gameday each HERO was able to pick up an official HERO cape and run through the inflatable helmet on-field during pregame to high five the team as Blue Hens took the field for the game.
Over 200 HEROes flew on-field together during pregame and the program itself graciously welcomed over 700 people to the game, inclusive of the HEROes themselves, their teachers and families.
The Be A HERO program details, bucket filler ideas, bucket dipper don'ts, and Blue Hens HERO videos showcasing positive behavior can be found at www.BlueHens.com/BeAHero.
The concept is simple and transferrable to Blue Hens of all ages. You don't have to be a super hero to be an everyday HERO. Be kind. Make a difference.
