Blue Hens Draw Virginia in First Round of NCAA Tournament

INDIANPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Delaware field hockey squad learned its fate in the NCAA Tournament late Sunday evening as it was announced that the No. 15 Blue Hens will travel to Charlottesville, Va. to face third-seeded Virginia in the first round of the postseason tournament.
The game, a rematch of an Oct. 18 contest in which the Cavaliers pulled out the 3-2 overtime victory at Fred P. Rullo Stadium, will be played at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, November 14 at Virginia's University Hall Turf Field.
Rolf van de KerkhofDelaware (16-5) earned its third straight berth into the NCAA Tournament after defeating James Madison, 2-1, in overtime earlier Sunday in the CAA title game. This will be the Hens seventh overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Virginia (14-5) earned an at-large bid and the No. 3 overall seed after falling in overtime to Syracuse in the ACC Semifinals.
The winner of Saturday's first game will take on the victor of the 2 p.m. contest between Duke (12-6) and Stanford (13-6). Sunday's second round game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
The Blue Hens are 6-8-1 all-time against the Cavaliers and are winless in each of the past six matches versus Virginia. The two teams previously met in postseason play during the 1976 AIAW National Tournament.
All seats at Turf Field for the games will be general admission with adult tickets priced at $5 and Student/Youth tickets priced at $3. Tickets will go on sale Monday, Nov. 9 and can be purchased online at VirginiaSports.com or by calling the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800-542-8821. Day-of-game sales at Turf Field will be CASH ONLY.
Syracuse, North Carolina and Connecticut will serve as the other three host sites for the first and second round games. The winner of each site will advance to the NCAA semifinals Nov. 20 in Ann Arbor, Mich. The National Championship game will take place Nov. 22 at Michigan.
