NEWARK, Del. -- When the University of Delaware women's basketball squad hosts Drexel in a key Colonial Athletic Association matchup this Sunday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center, the day will be about much more than just competition on the hardwood.
Delaware Athletics will host its annual Women's Health Awareness event, giving all fans the opportunity to learn more about healthy lifestyles and the resources available to women.
The doors to the event will open at 12:30 p.m. and a Health Fair will be set up on the concourse level featuring interactive and educational exhibits from reNu Chiropractic, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Christiana Care Health System, National Brain Tumor Society, and the Blood Bank of Delmarva.
Free health screenings for women compliments of HealthyU Employee Wellness, University of Delaware School of Nursing, and Healthy HENS will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Free giveaways will also be distributed and “Go Red” Blue Hens Heart Beads will be presented to the first 500 women in attendance at the fair.
At halftime of the game, noted speaker Nicolle D. Surratte will address the crowd with her talk entitled “T.I.M.E. for Health” where she will discuss healthy strategies that are practical and easy to implement. Surratte works with organizations who seek to promote health and wellness as a lifestyle, and through her company, NspireD, she motivates, guides and breathes life into others.
A resident of New Castle, Del., she is a breast cancer survivor and a fitness and nutrition enthusiast who “embraces life and aims to live each day with an exclamation point.”
All fans are urged to wear the colors pink or red in support of women's health awareness.
The color red represents strength, joy and power and during American Heart Month in February, it symbolizes the fight against heart disease in women. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, taking more lives than all forms of cancer combined. Go Red For Women is a movement that is by women for women. For details, click here.
The color pink is in honor of WBCA Play 4 Kay breast cancer awareness initiative - a nation of coaches raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer, and it is the most common cancer among American women, other than skin cancers.
